AMSTERDAM LIGHT FESTIVAL

„O.T. 976 is the second art work of Stefan Reiss, where he tries to approximate the famous String theory in a playful, humorous way. The status quo of scientifically proven physical theories is the atomic structure with its elementary particles. The String theory claims, that inside those particles strings build the inner structure of the universe. Stefan Reiss takes the theory literally and arranges 39 ropes in a heavy steel frame, folding over the canal, which is the projection surface for a constantly changing composition of colourful lines, triangles and polygons creating a poetic experience for the whole body. In his work he asks himself simple questions: How can I define space and interspace, surface and volume, presence and absence of light?"

The basic structure is a metall frame, filled with white, robust ropes. This sculpture was a light, tentlike day sculpture. At night a 20-minutes animation (black-and-white, color) was projected onto the ropes from two sides (mapped projection). The projection contains a very colourful and rythmic composition of lines and forms. Using two projectors and the media players. The exhibition ran for more than 50 days, daily between 5 pm and 11 pm and was exposed to rain, wind and cold.
